President's Welcome Letter

On behalf of the Everglades Astronomical Society, I’d like to welcome you to our web site. Our membership is committed to promoting astronomy. We do so in many ways. In addition to our regular monthly meetings and observing sessions, we participate by setting up display tables at art shows, nature centers, museums, science fairs, and giving talks at libraries, clubs, and community associations. We also set up telescopes for public viewing at schools, on the beach, and even downtown Naples. Regardless of your knowledge level, anyone interested in astronomy is encouraged to participate with us. Please let me emphasize that you don’t need a telescope to attend meetings, events, or observing sessions. Our members are very generous and anxious to let you peer through their scopes.

Often, members will receive questions regarding something astronomical. It may be that you have a newly acquired telescope that you are unsure as to how to set it up or use it. Perhaps you saw a bright object in the sky and would like to identify it. Other sections of our site may answer the information you are seeking. If not, whatever your question, go to the CONTACT section of this web site and send it to us. We will do our best to get your question answered.

Our members are a very diverse bunch. Some are very accomplished observers and some are just learning. Others artfully pursue astrophotography. (See the PHOTO GALLERY for some of the work they have done.) Still, others focus their interests on meteors/meteorites, archaeoastronomy, planets, telescope making, astrophysics, and teaching. Our monthly guest speakers reflect the diverse interests shared by our members. Because Southwest Florida is desirable as tourist destination especially in the winter months, we are in a unique position to have members who belong to two astronomy clubs, and we host people from locations from around the country and from beyond our US borders. It is always a joy when guests attend our meetings or a special event. So, if you find yourself in our neck of the woods, please check the other pages of our web site to find out where we are and join us. We would love to share our passion for astronomy with you.

Clear Skies,

Denise Sabatini, President
